Bravo was born in Italy to a father who owned a New York Bronx hairdressing salon. She attended the Bronx High School of Science, and then went on to Fordham University to study English literature. In 1971, she was a cum laude graduate and became a buyer at Abraham and Straus’ department store on Long Island. Macy’s hired her in 1974. She continued working at I. Magnin until 1992, when her company purchased it. Victor Barnett appointed her as chief executive of Burberry after five more years as Saks Fifth Avenue’s President and Chief Merchant.
She initiated radical changes to the British brand and improved the company’s structure in her new role. She signed Kate Moss, a top model, and recruited Christopher Bailey, a young designer who was at the time working for Gucci. The company saw a significant increase in the number of products from Burberry, and the new additions to its perfume line contributed to their increasing profits.
In 2005, Burberry announced Bravo would step down for Angela Ahrendts (formerly Liz Claiborne). After a 6 months transitional period, Bravo retired as a CEO and became vice chairman of Burberry.
