Peterson was a key figure in the Second and Tenth Amendment protests held in Spokane in 2015. Peterson drafted new rules to ban firearms from the area surrounding the Thomas S. Peterson was born in Salt Lake City and attended University of Utah from 1969 to 1970, then again from 1971 to 1972. In 1977, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Dakota and in 1983, a Master of Arts from the university. She received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1991.

Van Sickle of the United States District Court for Eastern District of Washington from 1991 to 1993. Peterson was then an associate attorney at a Spokane firm between 1993 and 1994, before becoming a sole practitioner in 1995. From 1995 to 1997, she was an associate attorney at another Spokane firm. In 1998, she became a partner in another Spokane firm. Peterson was an adjunct professor (1999 to 2005), visiting professor (2005 to 2007) and assistant professor (2007 to 2010) at Gonzaga University School of Law. In 2002, she was appointed the director of the externship program at the law school.
