Rosalind Picard is one of the most popular and richest Computer Scientist who was born on May 17, 1962 in Massachusetts, United States. Rosalind Wright Picard, born May 17, 1962, is an American inventor and scholar. She is Professor of Media Arts and Sciences, MIT Media Lab. She is also the founder and director for the Affective Computer Research Group at MIT Media Lab. She was elected Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 2005 for her contributions to affective computing and image and video analysis. She was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2019 for her work on wearable computing and affective computing. This is one of the most prestigious professional honors an engineer can receive.

Picard, Rana el Kaliouby and Picard founded Affectiva in 2009. Picard became the company’s chief scientific officer for the next four-years. The technology that Picard and Rana el Kaliouby had developed at the MIT Media Lab’s Affective Computing Research group was the basis of the company. Picard founded Empatica, Inc. in April 2014. The company creates wearable sensors and analytics that help people understand and communicate emotions. Her team demonstrated that seizures could be detected by physiological changes in the emotion systems.

Picard is known for inventing the field of affective computing through her 1997 book. The book discussed the importance of emotion and intelligence, how important human emotion communication is to human relationships, and the potential effects of emotion recognition robots and wearable computer. Her research in this area has led her to expand into autism research and develop devices that can help humans recognize subtleties in human emotions.

Rosalind Picard is one of the richest Computer Scientist from United States. According to our analysis, Wikipedia, Forbes & Business Insider, Rosalind Picard 's net worth $5 Million. (Last Update: December 11, 2023)

Picard is also a researcher in robotic intelligence. Picard’s team developed an “emotional/social intelligence prosthesis” that allows autistic people to monitor their facial reactions and learn from others. The device could read one of eight emotions from an individual’s head movements and facial expressions with a 65% accuracy rate. Parts of this technology were presented at the 11th Annual International Symposium on Wearable Computers.

Picard has a bachelor’s degree with highest honors in electrical engineering, as well as a certificate of computer engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology (1984). She also holds master’s (1986), and doctorate degrees (1991) in both electrical engineering and computer science from MIT. Texture Modeling: Temperature effects on Markov/Gibbs Random Fields was her thesis. Since 1991, she has been a member the MIT Media Laboratory faculty with tenure in 1998 and a full professorship in 2005.

Her work has influenced many fields beyond computer science, ranging from video games to law. One critic, Aaron Sloman, described the book as having a “bold vision” that will inspire some and irritate others. Other critics emphasize the importance behind the work as it establishes an important framework for the field as a whole. Picard responded to Sloman’s review by saying, “I don’t think the review captures the flavor of the book. However, he does raise interesting points, as well as potential misunderstandings, both of which I am grateful for the opportunity to comment on”.

How does affective computing work?

Affective computing technologies sense the emotional state of a user (via sensors, microphone, cameras and/or software logic) and respond by performing specific, predefined product/service features , such as changing a quiz or recommending a set of videos to fit the mood of the learner.

Why is it called the Turing test?

The Turing Test is a method of inquiry in artificial intelligence (AI) for determining whether or not a computer is capable of thinking like a human being. The test is named after Alan Turing , the founder of the Turing Test and an English computer scientist, cryptanalyst, mathematician and theoretical biologist.

Who invented affective computing?

1 Affective Computing. The artificial intelligence (AI) field picked up the idea that human rational thinking depends on emotional processing. Rosalind Picard’s “Affective Computing” had a major effect on both the AI and HCI fields (Picard, 1997).
