Rory Sparrow is one of the most popular and richest Basketball Player who was born on June 12, 1958 in Suffolk, Virginia, United States. Rory Darnell Sparrow, born June 12, 1958, is an American former professional basketball player who was a member of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

New Jersey had traded Sparrow to Atlanta Hawks prior to 1981-82 for a fourth- round pick in the draft. Sparrow was made a point guard by Coach Kevin Loughery and he never looked back. Sparrow played in all 82 games, scoring an average of 10.5 points per game and 5.2 assists. The Hawks were 42-40, but lost the first round playoffs.

During his tenure in New York, Sparrow set up the Rory F. Sparrow Foundation, a charitable organization designed to aid underprivileged children in the New York metropolitan area. At the end of the 1985–86 season Sparrow was recognized for his efforts when he and the Lakers’ Michael Cooper were named co-winners of the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award. Then, in the 1987 year- end issue of Sports Illustrated, Sparrow was featured on the cover as one of eight “Athletes Who Care.” The magazine collectively honored the group as Sportsmen and Sportswomen of the Year.

The following year, he set a career high for assists with 7.1 per game. In 1985–86, he averaged 10.8 points and 6.4 assists. New York, however, won only 23 games, posting its worst record since 1963–64.

Sparrow, a 6-foot-2″ guard, was selected by the New Jersey Nets as the 75th overall pick (round 4 pick 6) in the 1980 NBA Draft. He played 12 years with various teams, including the Nets. When the Miami Heat franchise was founded in 1988, he scored the first field goal.

Sparrow’s NBA career began with humble beginnings. He was drafted by the New Jersey Nets fourth round in the 1980 NBA Draft after playing at Villanova for Rollie Masimino. Sparrow was dropped by the Nets in training camp and he decided to join the Continental Basketball Association. He joined the Scranton Aces. Sparrow scored 24.1 points per game and had 9.0 assists in 20 games with the Aces. Sparrow was called up by the Nets twice during 1980-81, but he only appeared in 15 NBA games that season.

Rory Sparrow was a steady guard throughout his 12-year NBA career. Sparrow enjoyed his greatest years with the Atlanta Hawks, the New York Knicks, and then went on to be a charter member for the expansion Miami Heat. Sparrow was also a champion of the community, and was lauded for his success on the court. Sports Illustrated named Sparrow co-Sportsman Of The Year in 1987.

Midway through the next season Atlanta traded Sparrow to the New York Knicks for Scott Hastings. Over the next five years Sparrow became a staple in an otherwise shifting New York backcourt. He enjoyed his greatest team success during the 1983–84 campaign. The Knicks posted a 47-35 record, beat the Detroit Pistons in the opening round of the playoffs, and then fell to the Boston Celtics in a tough seven-game series in the conference semifinals. As a starter in the backcourt, Sparrow averaged 10.4 points and 6.8 assists in the regular season, then contributed 11.2 points per game in the playoffs.
