Farahanipour studied law at the University of Azad Tehran Branch until 1993 when he was expelled for political reasons and barred from further education. Farahanipour founded an Iranian Studies journal in 1994. It was a journal that emphasized Zoroastrianism. This was in a political climate where studying Iran’s preIslamic past was considered to be a form of dissident. The journal was called Vohuman (“Pure Thought”) in the Zarathustra teachings. It gained a large following. His own publishing house was also founded, with an emphasis on the ancient Iranian.
Farahanipour was appointed chief editor of Nedayeh Ghomess in 1998 after Vohuman was expelled by Islamic authorities. The Ministry of Intelligence and National Security terminated his editorship after he tried to publish the names of 57 victims of the notorious serial murders of that period in which many anti-regime intellectuals were killed. Dariush Forouhar, his wife Parvaneh, were among those killed by the regime agents during this massacre. Forouhar was the leader of Hezbe Mellate Iran, a pan-Iranist opposition group (the “National Party of Iran”, or “People’s Party of Iran). This was a spin- off from the Pan-Iranist Party, which supported the reunification and expansion of Greater Iran. It had been allowed to function in the parliament as an opposition party during Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s reign, despite its support of Mohammad Mossadegh. Farahanipour, who was one of the leaders of the movement for a panIranian revival with roots in ancient Persian heritage, was assassinated by the Forouhars. Farahanipour, along with some of his nationalist peers who had been involved in the Iranian Studies circle of Vohuman organized the Hezbe Marze Por Gohar (“Glorious Frontiers Party”), named after the patriotic song that was suppressed under the Islamic regime. He also helped organize “The National Society of Journalists” as well as being a member of its executive committee. Marze Por Gohar played a key role in the anti-regime secularist movement that occurred in July 1999. This was known in Iran as “18th of Tir”, a precursor to the larger national uprising that would occur a decade later. Marze Por Gohar was declared an illegal party by the Ministry of Intelligence, and Farahanipour was decried as a leader of unrest. His house was raided on July 14, 1999 by armed Islamic militias. Twelve of his comrades were also taken into custody, as well as two Afghan house guests. Farahnipour spent 36 days in isolation in Towhid, one of the most notorious Islamic regime prisons. He was tortured repeatedly and interrogated at every turn by the Ministry of Intelligence as well as the revolutionary court. The United Nations’ Report on the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Follow- up to World Conference on Human Rights included Farahnipour’s personal testimony about torture. His bail was 50,000,000 Rials, and he was released with the deed of a compatriot. Farahanipour decided to continue his struggle abroad, despite the long sentences he received in prison. Farahanipour fled Iran to seek political asylum in America.
