Roosevelt Leaks is one of the most popular and richest Former American football player who was born on January 31, 1953 in Brenham, Texas, United States. Roosevelt Leaks Jr. was born January 31, 1953. He is an ex- All-American running back who was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2005. He was the University of Texas’ first black All-American football player. He went on to play for the Baltimore Colts (NFL) and the Buffalo Bills in the National Football League.

He was the team’s top rusher in 1972. He ran for 1,099 yards with eight touchdowns. This made him the second Longhorn to rush over 1,000 yards in a single season. As a running back, he was awarded All-Southwest Conference accolades and helped Texas to a 10-year-old regular season record and #7 ranking. This win gave Texas victory over Alabama in the Cotton Bowl. He rushed for 120 yards in that game, which was at the time the third-best performance of a Texas runningback in the Cotton Bowl. Quarterback Alan Lowry ran 117 yards. This was the first time that Texas had two 100-yard rushers within the same bowl game. The Longhorns, who were down 13-3 at halftime, beat the Tide in halftime and placed third in the final AP Poll.

Leaks was selected in the fifth round of the 1975 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Colts. He played five years for the Colts, putting up 1,268 yards and 14 touchdowns, but he spent most of his fifth season on the sidelines after the Colts added former first-round choice Don Hardeman. After the 1979 season, he was waived by Baltimore and picked up by the Buffalo Bills, where he spent four years carrying the ball and blocking for Joe Cribbs. He was considered one of the best blocking backs in the NFL and went to the playoffs 5 out of 9 years. At training camp of his tenth year he was cut by the Bills in August

  1. At that time, only one running back from his class, Walter Payton, was still playing.

Leaks and his wife had been working in the real estate business for several years before his football career ended and he transitioned into it full-time. In 1987, he began working with Texas General Land Office in Austin, eventually becoming the Director of Veterans Land Board Appraisals. He retired from that job in 2013.

Leaks was as good as in 1972 as a senior, but even better in 1973. Leaks was the team’s top rusher again and set both school and Southwest Conference records for rushing with 1,415 yard. He also tied or set 7 other school records during that season. This included the conference record for most yards per game, when he ran for 342 yard in a 42-14 victory over SMU. Eric Allen’s NCAA record, 350 yards, was set in 1971. This was eight yards less than this. Leaks was named All-SWC and consensus All-American again. He was third in the Heisman balloting. This made him the fifth Longhorn Heisman finalist. He tied James Saxton’s 1961 performance as the best Longhorn Heisman finish. Texas finished 14th in the 1973 Southwest Conference championship with 8-3 record. They were also ranked eighth. However, they lost the Cotton Bowl 19-3 against

12 Nebraska.
