Ronnie Brunswijk, born 7 March 1961, is a Surinamese politician, ex-rebel leader and businessman. Brunswijk, who was the personal bodyguard of Desi Bouterse in the 1980s, overthrew the government in a military coup in 1980, and Brunswijk formed the Surinamese Liberation Army (also known as the Jungle Commando).

Brunswijk also owns and plays for the Marowijne football team Inter Moengotapoe. Brunswijk constructed a football stadium at Moengo in 2002. He named it the Ronnie Brunswijkstadion. He threatened players with a gun during a 2005 match, according to the Surinamese Football Association’s disciplinary committee. Brunswijk was suspended for five years. Because of lack of evidence, the suspension was retracted. Brunswijk was banned for one year in June 2012 after he behaved violently toward a referee and a football player.

Brunswijk and the government finally reached a peace agreement in 1991. This included the conversion of the Jungle Commando into a regular unit of the Surinamese army, which was responsible for maintaining their traditional territory. Maroons were also promised jobs in gold prospecting, forestry, and other related fields by the government. They were isolated from many of the developing industries.

On 29 November 1986, the Surinamese army attacked Brunswijk’s village of Moiwana. There, they killed at least 39 people, most of them women and children. Brunswijk was killed in the attack on Brunswijk’s home. Over 100 refugees fled to French Guiana and became refugee camps as the war progressed. The Inter-American Court of Human Rights ordered that the government pay millions of dollars (US), in compensation to 130 village survivors.

Brunswijk wanted to recognize and grant rights to the Maroon interior minority, descendants of African slaves that established their own communities in 17th and 18th centuries. He also wanted to “liberate Suriname” from military dictatorship. In a civil war known as the Surinamese Interior War, his forces fought the Bouterse-led national military. From 1986 to 1990, the civil war lasted, with hundreds of casualties and more than 10,000 refugees fleeing French Guiana. It also disrupted important mining industries. 1991 saw the conclusion of peace talks.

In December 2007, Brunswijk beat up Rashied Doekhi in the Surinamese parliament. Doekhi is a member of Desi Bouterse’s party and he insulted Paul Somohardjo, then chair of the Surinamese parliament.
