It was one of many AIDS buyers clubs at that time. He was diagnosed with the human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) in 1985. The group was formed as part of his efforts at finding and distributing drugs to treat HIV.

Mary Etta Pybus was his first marriage. They had a daughter, Yvette Lynn (born February 1, 1970). They split on March 23, 1972. He married Rory S. Flynn, a Dallas woman on May 6, 1972. They split on May 21, 1973. On October 4, 1982 in Lubbock, he married Brenda Shari Robin. After he was diagnosed in HIV, they divorced on March 4, 1986.

He sued the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over a ban on peptide T, a drug he was using. Woodroof’s final years became the basis of the 2013 film Dallas Buyers Club.
