He is the son of Te Aroha Maaka (nee Grace) and Apiti Stanley Maaka. From 1968 to 1970, he attended Tararua College. Mark married Gail Ann Berry and had four children.
He was the Labour candidate in the Selwyn electorate for 1993’s election. Later, he was involved in discussions regarding the formation of New Zealand Democratic Coalition. He joined New Zealand First after these failed.
The New Zealand television channel TV3 was banned for three days from filming in Parliament in August 2006 for showing Mark repeatedly giving the finger to another MP.
In 2009, Mark told media that while he still had a subscription with New Zealand First, he was “not active”, and that he would not rule out standing for Parliament with another party.
Mark worked as a commercial consultant and ran an import-export business. He also operated a amusement park.

Ron Stanley Mark, born 29 January 1954, is a New Zealand politician. He was formerly a soldier and has served as Minister for Defence since October 2017. From 2010 to 2014, he was mayor of Carterton.
Mark was a soldier between 1971-1990. Mark was an infantryman in the New Zealand Army. After serving in the New Zealand Army, Mark moved to the Royal New Zealand Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. He then joined the 2/1 Battalion and 3 and 10 Tpt regimenments and Queen Alexandra’s Mounted Rifles. Finally, he was selected for New Zealand Special Air Service. Mark was stationed in the Sinai for 13 months with the Multinational Force and Observers from 1982 to 1983. After being denied entry to the NZSAS in 1985, Mark was assigned to the Sultanate of Oman to serve as a technical staff officer between 1985 and 1986. He then joined the Sultan of Oman’s Armed Forces, becoming an electrical and mechanical engineer officer in the Sultan’s Special Force Electrical and Mechanical Engineers from 1986 to 1990.
He was a list MP from the 1996 election until his party’s failure to retain any seats in the 2008 election. During the (1996–98) coalition between New Zealand First and the National Party, he was the government’s Senior Whip.
