He resigned his House seat in 2000 to challenge incumbent Rick Santorum. Klink was defeated by five points. Klink was born in Canton Ohio and graduated from Meyersdale High School, Pennsylvania, in 1969. Klink started his career at WTAJ-TV Altoona in Pennsylvania. He was then made weatherman and fill-in anchor before he moved to Pittsburgh in July 1978. Klink was a well-known figure in Pittsburgh as a TV news weatherman and reporter for KDKA-TV between 1978 and 1991.
Klink ran for the Democratic nomination in 1992 to represent the 4th District. He defeated Joe Kolter, a five-term incumbent, in the primary. Klink was easily elected to the House in November. He served four terms and never lost less than 64 per cent of the vote. Klink was a moderate Democrat and strong labor ties were popular in his district.
According to then-Congressman Curt Weldon in his book Countdown to Terror, in 2003, Klink offered Weldon the identity of an intelligence source with information on Iraqi uranium purchases. The agent was thought to be Iranian arms dealer Manucher Ghorbanifar. The intelligence reportedly later proved to be fabricated.
