After pleading guilty, Behagen was sentenced on January 3, 2012 to three years probation, along with an order to pay restitution. According to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office Behagen was given the ATM card by Valla Rider, the woman’s caretaker. Behagen took $7,140 from the woman’s bank account and made 40 transactions. All transactions were recorded by bank cameras. Rider pleaded guilty in August 2011 to financial transaction fraud.
Behagen was a professional basketball player in seven NBA seasons. He played for the New Orleans Jazz, Kansas City Kings and Atlanta Hawks as well as the Houston Rockets and Indiana Pacers. In 1974, he was named to the NBA All- Rookie Team. He averaged 10.3 points per game and 7.0 rebounds during his NBA career.

Behagen, a 6’9″ center from DeWitt Hillary High School in New York City was a basketball player in junior college as well as at the University of Minnesota in the 1970s. Dave Winfield, a future Baseball Hall-of-Famer, was one of his teammates. Behagen was drafted in 1973 by the Kentucky Colonels as part of the 1973 American Basketball Association draft, and then by the Kansas City Kings at the first round in the 1973 NBA draft.
Behagen and his teammates were involved in a serious incident on the court that occurred on January 25, 1972. They attacked Ohio State University’s Luke Witte. According to the Big Ten Conference’s analysis of the game footage, Witte was seen to shove Minnesota’s Bobby Nix while the teams were heading to their locker rooms for halftime. With less than one minute remaining, Ohio State led 44-44. Witte was knocked to the ground by Minnesota’s Clyde Turner, who flagrantly fouled Witte on a layup attempt. Corky Taylor from Minnesota helped Witte to his feet, and then he kneed Witte in his groin. The two teams got into a melee, with Witte being helped up by Corky Taylor of Minnesota. Witte was then kneed in the groin by Witte. Fred Taylor, Ohio State’s coach, described the incident as “the most distressing thing [he] has ever seen in intercollegiate athletics.” Witte didn’t press charges against either Corky Taylor or Behagen for the remainder of the season.
