The Warriors were close to winning their first nine Hockey East seasons, but they never managed to win a single game. Anderson went 0-9 in the Hockey East tournament between 1990 and 1997, but did not win a single series postseason. They shocked the conference in 1998 by beating Boston University twice, Anderson’s top-ranked school. Anderson was informed that his contract would be terminated before the second round started. The 7-2 defeat to Boston College proved to be Anderson’s last game on the bench.

Anderson was a collegiate hockey player for Boston University for two years. He scored 87 points in 62 games with the Terriers. The Boston Bruins signed Anderson as a free agent in 1972 because of his scoring skills with BU. In 1972-73, Anderson would be with the Boston Braves AHL affiliate in 1973-74. In 1974-75, the NHL added two more teams, including teams in Kansas City, Missouri, and Washington, D.C. He was 34th among the Boston Bruins’ selections in the 1974 NHL Expansion Draft. He was a part of their inaugural season’s 28-game roster, scoring 9 goals and 7 assists. This earned him 16 points. Anderson also spent that year with Richmond Robins AHL affiliate of Philadelphia Flyers. Anderson spent one more season in minors before he moved to Europe, where he won a second league title with Villacher SV. He then played one more season with Wiener EV before retiring in 1978.
Anderson continued his hockey career and became almost immediately a coach when he was appointed as a replacement mid-season for the Welland Steelers. He joined Merrimack’s staff in 1980-81 as an assistant. On the eve the Warriors’ return from Division I, he was selected to replace Bruce Parker. Anderson was the Merrimack’s assistant for eight years after finishing as runner-up at the Division II championship. The Warriors’ success was remarkable despite not being part of a major conference. They had a 34-win season in 1987-1988, which was the most successful in school history (as of 2016). The NCAA extended the playoff, and Anderson’s team was the first independent team invited to the postseason in 60 years. Merrimack lost the first game to Hockey East champion Northeastern, before winning the second to win the series 10-8. They defeated eventual champion Lake Superior State in the quarterfinals. But their luck ran out, and the Warriors lost the series 5-0.
