Roman Turovsky-Savchuk Biography

Roman Turovsky-Savchuk is one of the most popular and richest Painter who was born on May 16, 1961 in Kiev, United States. Turovsky was born Kiev, Ukraine, in 1961 when the Soviet Union was still in existence. His father, Mikhail Turovsky, was a painter and he studied art at the Shevchenko State Art School. In his teens, he began to take an interest in music. In 1979, the family moved to New York City. The family lived first in the Bronx. Turovsky continued his art education in New York at Parsons School of Design. He studied concurrently Historical Performance (Baroque Lute), and Composition under Patrick O’Brien and Pier Luigi Cimma and Leonid Hrabovsky.

His works for the lute were widely circulated under the allonym Sautscheck, the pseudonyms Ioannes Leopolita and Jacobus Olevsiensis. These works were viewed by Douglas Alton Smith, a musicologist, as malicious hoaxes or forgeries due to their baroque or older styles. In 2000, there was much controversy over what many considered to be an outright hoax. This led to the creation of Sautscheckerei, a German word that denoted a literary or musical hoax.

He also undertook research into the history of Torban, a Ukrainian musical instrument of the lute family, and wrote the chapter on it for the 2011 edition of “Die Laute in Europa”.

In 2011 Turovsky-Savchuk contributed the soundtrack to the Iryna Korpan’s documentary “She Paid The Ultimate Price”, and in 2013 to the Marko Robert Stech’s Georgy Narbut episode in the KontaktTV Toronto (OMNI TV (Canada)) series “Eyes on Culture” №55.

Turovsky signed his musical works under the name Sautscheck since 1996. This is a German transliteration for his second surname, which is an allonym. Turovsky used many constructions for the first names attached to Sautscheck, including Joachim Peter and Johann Joachim. The works were represented by Turovsky as newly discovered manuscripts of 17th-,18th-, and 19th century composers from different generations of the same family.
