Roman Sushchenko (Ukrainian, Roman Sushchenko, 8 February 1969) was a Ukrainian journalist/artist. His 2016 arrest in Russia for spying charges led to his sentence in 2018. A number of international and Ukrainian agencies have criticized the sentence and his detention. In September 2019, Sushchenko was freed.

He was detained at Lefortovo Prison after he was charged with espionage in Moscow. Russia’s Federal Security Service charged him with espionage in support of the Chief Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence. This claim was refuted by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, and Sushchenko himself denies the charges. The arrest was also protested by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, which called it “another step of the Russian Federation’s purposeful policy to use Ukrainians, who have been in the hands of authorities, as political hostages in its hybrid aggression towards our country.” Sushchenko was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by the Moscow City Court after two years of detention. He is currently serving his sentence at the Penal Colony No. 11 (IK-11). The verdict was condemned by the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who stated that it was based on false accusations and gave Sushchenko the Ukrainian Order For Courage Third Class.

In February 2019, the Ukrainian Ministry of Information Policy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs nominated Sushchenko and another Ukrainian journalist, Mykola Semena, also arrested and sentenced by Russia in a way the Ukrainian government finds illegal, for the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.
