Roland Collombin is one of the most popular and richest Olympic Athlete who was born on February 17, 1951 in Bagnes, Valais, Switzerland. The Winter Olympics, which ran from 1948 to 1980, were also the World Championships in alpine skiing.
Collombin, who fell at Val-d’Isere’s first downhill on December 8, 1974, fractured his spine and ended his 1975 season. Franz Klammer from Austria won his first of four consecutive downhill season titles in his absence. Collombin tried to make a comeback at Val-d’Isere on December 7, 1975, but he fell at the same jump the year before, breaking two vertebrae. He was paralyzed for two more days, ending his racing career. Since then, the jump has been called “Bosse a Collombin”. Collombin was almost paralysed and he did not walk again until February 1976, following the 1976 Winter Olympics at Innsbruck. Collombin finished his World Cup career with eight wins and three runner up finishes in downhill.
In January 1974, Collombin won the month’s four downhills in consecutive weeks, which included the two classics: the Lauberhorn at Wengen, Switzerland, and the Hahnenkamm at Kitzbühel, Austria. Collombin had finished second in the previous two downhills in December 1973 for six consecutive downhill podiums. The repeat win at Kitzbühel was in record time, besting Jean-Claude Killy’s mark of 1967, but was Collombin’s last finish in international competition. (Franz Klammer of Austria broke the record at Kitzbühel the following year.)
Collombin and his wife Sarah operate a guest house in Versegères, and Collombin also has a product line of wines. In late 2014 Roland and Sarah opened a raclette bar named “La Streif”(in reference to the ski run in Kitzbuehel, Austria, where Collombin won several times), in the Swiss town of Martigny.
Collombin won the World Cup season title in downhill and dominated the event for the next two World Cup seasons 1973 and 1974.

He won the silver medal for the downhill at 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo (Japan) two months later. He finished behind Bernhard Russi.
