He is an American former professional basketball player who also serves as the assistant coach of the Gonzaga Bulldogs men’s basketball team. After graduating from Joliet High School in 2001, he played at the University of Illinois collegiate basketball. Powell was the forward position in high school and college. He received a degree from the University of Illinois in speech communications. Powell’s father, Joliet Central High School player and Illinois State player, was also a former Joliet Central High School player.

Powell was an honorable mention All Big Ten selection in his third season as an Illini player. Powell missed 31 games due to a concussion he sustained in a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal match against Indiana. He averaged 11.6 point per game, which was third on the team and 20th for the Big Ten. He also averaged 5 rebounds per game, which was second among the team. At 59.5 percent, he was third in the Big Ten for field goal shooting. He also ranked second in the Big Ten for offensive rebounding, with 75 points. Powell scored 24 points, and took nine rebounds against Wisconsin on January 24, 2004. This was his highest career score. He scored 22 points from 9-11 on the NCAA Tournament second round victory over Cincinnati. The performance was followed by a team record 15-point, 8-rebound game against Duke in the Sweet 16. Powell was eligible for the NBA draft, but he did not sign with an agent. He was not drafted and he will not be able to return for his senior season.

Powell continued to pursue a career in the NBA trying out for the Utah Jazz where he was reunited with former Illini teammates Dee Brown and Deron Williams. After working relentlessly over the summer, Powell made the Jazz’s final roster for the 2006-07 NBA season. However, he was cut in mid-January, having scored his first points in the NBA with a pair of free throws on November 18, 2006 against the Phoenix Suns after being fouled by Shawn Marion.

In 2007-08, he joined Teramo Basket of Serie A in Italy.

Powell was a senior who averaged 20.7 points per game and nine rebounds. He was also a 25-5 sectional finalist, ranked No. In the Chicago area, Powell is No. 3. He was awarded First Team All State honors by Joliet in 2001 by the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette. He was a Top 100 consensus prospect and was fourth in voting to be Mr. Basketball in Illinois. After his senior year, he participated in the Wendy’s All-Star Classic. He was also awarded MVP honors at IBCA All-Star Game. Powell was named one of the “100 Legends of the IHSA Boys Basketball Tournament” in 2007, in recognition of his outstanding performance during the tournament.

Powell was a three year starter and four-year letterwinner for Joliet Township High School. He led the Steelmen to a record of 20-8 as a junior.
