Langridge first came to prominence with Judge Dredd Megazine’s The Straitjacket Fits, written by David Bishop. This surreal, hallucinatory strip was set in an insane asylum and featured a cast that realized they were in a comic strip. Langridge was a regular artist in 1988 issues of Craccum, the magazine of the Auckland University Student’ Association.
His cartoon style was perfect for the series. He continued to work at the Megazine in addition to a series comedy books about Fred the Clown (Buster Keaton-inspired). The comics were written and drawn by him as a webcomic, before he self-published the material as small press titles. Fantagraphics Books collected them all in a single volume in 2004. His work on Fred the Clown won him two Eisner Awards. He also received a Harvey Award, Reuben Award, and an Ignatz Award. Langridge is also an illustrator.
In 2012, he scripted for IDW a four-issue Popeye miniseries, illustrated by Bruce Ozella, so successful that even before the second issue it was expanded into an “ongoing” series, according to Langridge.
