In February 1990, Rogers’ stepfather James Spencer, whom Rogers called “Dad”, succumbed to lung cancer. Renita, the eldest of the Rogers’ children, was a nurse at N.C. Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill. Stacy, his older brother, was a graduate of the Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf, in Wilson, and the N.C. School for the Deaf, in Morganton. He won a gold medal at the 1981 XIV Deaflympics, also known as “World Games for the Deaf”, and “World Deaf Olympics” in Cologne. He then worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham. Stanley, his brother, was sentenced to a 20 year term for armed robbery at Central Prison, Raleigh, which he served from 1981-1991.

On June 28, 1995, Rogers was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, with draft rights to guard Brent Barry, for the draft rights to forward Antonio McDyess and guard Randy Woods. He spent four years with the Clippers.

He was a Greensboro News & Record All-State two-time selection and was the 1990 North Carolina State Player of the Year. He averaged 22.5 points, 9.7 rebounds and 28.3 points per game in junior. His senior year saw him average 28.3 points, 12.3 rebounds and a team of 27-2 that advanced to the quarterfinals at the state 4-A playoffs. He was named McDonald’s All-American, scoring 17 points.
