He was a former coach for the Sydney Swans, Western Bulldogs, and Gold Coast Football Club. He has coached 377 AFL football games to date. This puts him in first place on the AFL/VFL all-time list for most games coached without a premiership.
Two times, Eade resigned mid-season. In 2002 Sydney was fourteenth and 2011 the Western Bulldogs was twelfth.
In the 2008 season, Eade coached the Bulldogs to third on the ladder and then to the club’s first preliminary final since 1998, but they were eliminated by Geelong who were eventual runners-up. In 2009 and 2010, Eade took the Bulldogs two more consecutive preliminary finals, falling to St Kilda on both occasions.
On 3 October 2011, Eade was appointed by Collingwood to the position of Football and Coaching Strategist, replacing outgoing coach Mick Malthouse, who had originally planned to step into that role after the 2011 season.
In 1996, Eade was appointed coach of the Sydney Swans. He led them to a grand semifinal in which North Melbourne lost. He took Sydney to sixth place on the ladder in 1997, but they lost to North Melbourne in the finals. He took Sydney to third place on the ladder in 1998. They defeated St Kilda at the qualifying finals, before being beaten in the semi-finals by Adelaide, eventual premiers. He took Sydney to the eighth spot on the ladder in 1999, where they lost to Essendon in the semi finals by 69 points. He took Sydney to the eleventh place on the ladder in 2000, but missed the finals. He took Sydney to the finals in 2001, finishing seventh on the ladder and being defeated by Hawthorn during the elimination finals. After Sydney’s record became worse each week, and he was placed 14th on the ladder in 2002, Eade resigned. Paul Roos replaced him for the remainder of 2002 and Roos was finally appointed full-time.

Rodney Eade, a Glenorchy schoolboy, was recruited to the Hawthorn Hawks in his 18th year. Eade was a fast player with lots of speed and dash. He played in the 1976 premiership team. He played in the Hawks 1983, 1978, and 1986 premierships teams. Between 1976 and 1987, he played in 229 games as a winger. He also kicked 46 goals for Hawthorn. He left the Hawks to join the Brisbane Bears in 1989. Eade suffered injuries as he grew older, but he managed to play 30 games and kick three goals before he retired in 1990.
Eade began coaching immediately after his retirement in 1990. He was the reserves coach for the Brisbane Bears in 1991 and led them to the reserve’s premiership that year. Later, he coached the North Melbourne reserves and led them to the 1995 premiership. Eade was able to make a strong case for a job as a senior coach in 1996 after his successes at the reserves level.
Eade spent 2003 and 2004 as a media writer and commentator before being appointed coach of the Western Bulldogs for the 2005 season. In his first season as their coach he took an under-achieving Bulldogs side within a goal of a finals series berth, after they had finished with less than five wins in the previous two years, but just missed out of the finals finishing in ninth spot on the ladder. In 2006, he took the Bulldogs to a final series, for the first time since Terry Wallace in 2000, where they eliminated Collingwood in the elimination finals but lost to eventual premiers West Coast in the semi finals. In the 2007 season, he took the Bulldogs to thirteenth on the ladder and, consequently, his job was in jeopardy due to the sudden downturn in the team’s performance. But rather than firing him, the club limited his expansive duties.
