Rod Smallwood is one of the most popular and richest Manager who was born on February 17, 1950 in Huddersfield, England, United Kingdom. Roderick Charles Smallwood, born 17 February 1950, is an English music manager. He is best known for being the co-manager of British heavy metal band Iron Maiden. He founded the Sanctuary Records Group with Andy Taylor, his business partner. They met at Trinity College, Cambridge while he was studying at Trinity College. It became the UK’s largest independent record label and the largest independent music management firm until its closure in 2007. Smallwood was previously the manager of Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel before he managed Iron Maiden.
Smallwood returned to university in 1979 to study law. He was also given a copy the demo tape of Iron Maiden. After much thought, Smallwood finally reached out to Steve Harris, the founder member of the band and bassist, and arranged for two pub gigs in west London. One at The Swan in Hammersmith and one at Windsor Castle in Maida Vale. The shows did not go according to plan. The first show was cancelled by the band after they refused to play at the time. The band then had to perform the second gig without Paul Di’Anno as lead singer. He was also arrested for having a knife about 30 minutes before the gig. Despite this, Smallwood was willing to assist the group. However, he didn’t initially agree to be their full-time manager after his experience with Steve Harley. He arranged for the band’s signing to EMI at the end. The pair managed the band ever since, eventually being joined by Andy Taylor in 1982.
Smallwood, who had committed himself to Iron Maiden management in October 1979, decided to start his own management company. He would name it after Iron Maiden’s second single “Sanctuary”. Sanctuary Records Group grew to become the UK’s largest independent record label until it was closed in 2007. Before this, Smallwood, Andy Taylor and Sanctuary Records Group formed Phantom Music Management, which focuses exclusively on Iron Maiden.

Smallwood started studying architecture at Trinity College in Cambridge in the fall of 1968. He soon began to organize social events such as Trinity May Ball. He made a friend with Andy Taylor, a fellow student and his future business partner. Smallwood and Taylor began working together on end-of term events and booked many musicians including Chris Farlowe and Bridget St John. Smallwood purchased most of these artists through Horus Arts, the local booking agency. Smallwood’s boss, Barry Hawkins gave Smallwood valuable advice that led to his success as a booking agent.
Smallwood moved to Paris with his girlfriend shortly before his 1971 final exams. Smallwood took a job with Gemini, a London-based booking agency, to fund a trip to Morocco after three months. Smallwood worked with Gemini and was offered a job at MAM (PS35 per week). He decided to abandon his trip to Morocco. Smallwood took over the management of Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, an English rock band after 18 months at MAM. Smallwood was not happy working with Harley. He later described him as “a pain” – “separate, egotistical and obsessed.” This “completely put my off management.” Harley was convinced by EMI to fire Trigram, his agency for management, and Smallwood took over the management of Gloria Mundi, a punk rock band.
The Iron Maiden b-side “Sheriff of Huddersfield” was written by Iron Maiden about Rod Smallwood, and was released on the 1986 single “Wasted Years”. It likens Smallwood to the Sheriff of Nottingham, due to his notorious stinginess with money, and refers to his frequent complaining about a (then recent) move to Los Angeles. Smallwood did not know about the song until the single was released.
