Rod Eddington is one of the most popular and richest Director who was born on January 2, 1950 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. Australian businessman Sir Roderick Ian AO FTSE was born 2 January 1950. He continues his long association with News Corporation as he is the chair of Infrastructure Australia. Other senior positions include CEO of British Airways.

After a loss in 2002 of PS200m, Eddington’s cost-cutting program “Future Size and Shape”, allowed BA to report a profit in 2003 of PS135m despite a decline in turnover. Eddington stated that “These are great results in one the most difficult years in living memory”. While this is to be expected from a CEO trying reassure investors it was against the backdrop of SARS and the Iraq War.

Eddington received a knighthood in 2005 for services to the aviation industry.

Eddington was replaced by Willie Walsh in October 2005 after he had followed a six-month shadow position.

Eddington succeeded Bob Ayling, the former CEO of BA, on May 2, 2000. In 2001, he relaunched the company and removed several aspects that Ayling had planned. The unpopular Union Jack tailfins were replaced by the traditional Union Jack. In the wake of the attacks on New York City, Washington D.C. on September 11, 2001, he managed the company. This proved to be disastrous for many other airlines.

Rod Eddington is one of the richest Director from Australia. According to our analysis, Wikipedia, Forbes & Business Insider, Rod Eddington 's net worth $5 Million. (Last Update: December 11, 2023)

Eddington was born in a rural area without high schools and moved to Perth to attend Christ Church Grammar School in 1963. Eddington studied engineering at University of Western Australia, graduating with first-class honours in 1972. He completed his UWA studies and received the Master of Engineering degree. Eddington, a Rhodes Scholar from Western Australia, was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship in 1974. Eddington completed his DPhil at Oxford University in Engineering Science. He also played eight first-class cricket matches in 1976 and 1975 for Oxford. In 1977, he was elected President of Vincent’s Club.

Eddington joined Swire Group as a worker for Cathay Pacific’s subsidiary. He was then appointed Managing Director in 1992. Eddington was still associated with the airline industry. News Limited, a subsidiary of News Corporation appointed him Chairman of Ansett Australian in January 1997. This was four years after the airline’s collapse. News Corp had taken control over the airline in 1979 with TNT. In September 1998, Eddington was elected Deputy Chairman of News Limited. In September 1999, he was promoted to the News Corporation board. News Corporation quickly sold Ansett. The airline became insolvent in 2001 due to the general difficulties in the airline industry after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Eddington was able to avoid being held responsible for the airline’s poor financial condition, probably because he was a member of News Corporation’s board. However, others were reluctant to criticise him publicly. Air New Zealand Management, which bought the airline in 2000 from News Corporation, has been blamed for the airline’s collapse. They have no experience managing large domestic short and medium haul networks. Eddington had met all targets to turn Ansett’s misfortune around before the Air New Zealand Management placed him into Administration. Some critics think the airline wasn’t technically insolvent.

The decision to permanently retire the British Airways Concorde in 2003 was made by Eddington, and his action remains highly controversial.
