Burgin started what would become a popular residency at Smoke Daddy, Chicago’s Wicker park neighborhood. The band included Jimmy Burns, a college friend, Martin Lang, on guitar and Sho Komiya, on bass. Kelly Littleton, longtime drummer for Lil’ Ed Williams, was either Kenny Smith (son Willie “Big Eyes”) Smith or Kelly Littleton. After hearing a set in 1996, Bob Koester, founder and CEO of Delmark Records signed Jimmy Burns to Burgin’s band.

Johnny Burgin, born July 17, 1969, is an American blues guitarist/harmonica player. He learned his skills from Chicago’s South and West side blues legends. He has released nine albums under his own name, and has played on many other recordings as a sideman for blues legends.

Johnny Burgin was a college radio DJ at University of Chicago. A chance encounter with David Waldman (a fellow DJ/harp player) led to a trip down to Chicago’s West Side where Tail Dragger met him.

Soon after that big break, Burgin recorded his debut CD (Straight Out of Chicago) as a band leader in 1997. The CD cemented his reputation as one of the hottest blues band in Chicago in the 1990s and led to collaborations with many legendary blues musicians and the beginning of his European tours.
