Carnahan is the daughter of a family that has been involved in Missouri politics for many generations. A. S. J. Carnahan, her grandfather, was elected to the House of Representatives in south-central Missouri as a Democrat. After being defeated in 1946, he served one term and was re-elected in 1948. Carnahan was elected to the House six times more. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy appointed him as the first American ambassador in Sierra Leone. Mel Carnahan was her father and served as the State Treasurer, Lieutenant Governor, Governor of Missouri, and Governor of Missouri. He died in a plane accident in 2000 while campaigning against John Ashcroft for the US Senate. Jean Carnahan, her mother, was the first Missouri woman to be elected to the United States Senate. She was then appointed to the position of Governor. Carnahan was elected posthumously.

Carnahan was elected Missouri’s 38th Secretary-of-State on November 2, 2004. She defeated Catherine Hanaway (R), Missouri’s Speaker of the House of Representatives, in her first attempt to be elected. Carnahan won a re- election with 62% of the vote after receiving more than 1.7 million votes. This was the highest number of votes cast for any candidate in Missouri history. The Rodel Foundation of Aspen Institute, a nonpartisan think tank, named her one of 24 “rising star” American politicians in 2005.

On February 27, 2006, Carnahan announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She continued to serve as Secretary of State while undergoing treatment and her cancer is in remission.

In 2008, Carnahan worked with Missouri’s local election authorities to ensure all eligible Missourians had access to the ballot box. She has been a strong advocate for early voting, paper ballots and better training for Election Day poll workers.

Carnahan, a member of a National Democratic Institute team, went to central Europe in 1990. She was responsible for drafting voting laws, training new political leaders, and monitoring elections in Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and other countries. She has been a leader of international election observers and has promoted democracy in a dozen other countries. She currently sits on the Board of Directors of NDI. Carnahan was a special assistant to the chairman of the Export-Import Bank of the United States during the Clinton Administration. She worked on programs that would help US companies increase their exports of US goods, and services. Carnahan later founded and managed an international business and trade consulting firm that advised US companies looking to expand into global markets.
