He was invited to take part in many culinary festivals around the globe while managing the Hassler. Since 1997, he has been a consultant to both the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo and the Indian chain Oberoi, for their management of the Cicerone restaurant.

In 2004 he founded CABSS Assistance Center for Deaf and Deafblind Children / Centro Assistenza per Bambini Sordi e Sordociechi Onlus (CABSS), a non-profit association dedicated to supporting deaf and deafblind children and their families. CABSS provides multisensory early intervention programs.

In November 2005 he received the prestigious “Independent Hotelier of the World 2005” award in New York which Roberto Wirth decided to dedicate to his native city, Rome, delivering it into the hands of Rome’s mayor Veltroni during a private ceremony at the Hassler.

He was awarded numerous awards and honours by associations for the hearing impaired in USA and Italy, as well as other institutions such as the Laurent Clerc Cultural Fund at the Gallaudet University in Washington DC in July 1992 (for excellence and contribution to a non-deaf field) and for his successful career as a hotelier.

From the beginning of the 20th century, Oscar Wirth was the manager at both the Hotel Eden in Rome and the Hotel Hassler. The Hotel Hassler was purchased by the Wirth family in 1964. Carmen Bucher Wirth, Oscar Wirth’s wife, took over management of the hotel after his death. Roberto Wirth was appointed General Manager in 1982. In 2001, his mother Carmen died and he bought the shares of Peter, his brother, and became the sole owner and President of Hassler Roma S.p.A.

Every year since 1992, the “Roberto Wirth” scholarship has been awarded to deaf teachers of deaf and deafblind kids. It is a collaboration between the U.S.Italy Fulbright Commission. Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C., is the only bilingual university (American Sign Language, English) in the world. It is also able to train professionals in the field.

In 1999, Roberto Wirth founded the International Wine Academy of Roma, in a 1500 building along the Spanish Steps. The intention was to create a place where wine lovers could meet for wine tastings or wine courses. A few years later, he opened a four-room boutique hotel in the same location: Il Palazzetto Il Palazzetto.

In May 2015, Wirth published his book “Il silenzio è stato il mio primo compagno di giochi » (translation: Silence was my first playmate), with the journalist Corrado Ruggeri, an autobiography that tells of the complex life of a man born profoundly deaf and forced to confront the prejudices of others, starting with those of his own family. The copyright fees are donated to non- profit CABSS (Assistance Center for Deaf and Deafblind Children), the association founded by Roberto Wirth dedicated to the support of deaf and deafblind children.
