The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. hosted the premiere of Sierra’s Missa Latina on February 2, 2006. Leonard Slatkin conducted it to great acclaim. The Washington Times called it the “most significant symphonic debut in the District since Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, which was first performed at the Washington National Cathedral in late 1960s.” The Missa Latina was performed in Sierra’s Puerto Rico homeland at the 51st Casals Festival on March 3, 2007. Sierra was born in Vega Baja (Puerto Rico). He studied composition in Europe, most notably with Gyorgy Lifgeti in Hamburg (1979-1982), Germany. His two-act opera El Mensajero de plata, set to a libretto written by Myrna casas, premiered at San Juan’s Interamerican Festival on October 9, 1986. In 1987, Sierra rose to fame when his first orchestral composition, Jubilo was performed at Carnegie Hall. Jubilo was first performed in Puerto Rico by Zdenek Mcal’s Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra in 1985. It was also performed by the same forces in 1986 under the direction of Akira Endo. His works have been part the repertoire of numerous top orchestras, ensembles, festivals and other organizations in Europe and the USA for more than 30 years. His Fandangos were performed on the opening night of 2002 Proms by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, which was televised across Europe.
He was presented with the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Academy Award in Music in 2003. According to the award, Roberto Sierra has written brilliant music. His compositions combine personal melodic lines with striking harmonies and rhythmic patterns. . .” His Sinfonia No. 1 was commissioned by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and won the Kenneth Davenport Competition in Orchestral Works 2004. Albany Records was presented with the Serge and Olga Koussevitzky International Records Award (KIRA), in 2007 for recording his composition Sinfonia No. 3 “La Salsa”. Roberto Sierra has served as Composer-In-Residence with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra and New Mexico Symphony. He was elected to The American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2010.
Roberto Sierra’s Music may be heard on CDs by Naxos, EMI, UMG’s EMARCY, New World Records, Albany Records, Koch, New Albion, Koss Classics, BMG, Fleur de Son and other labels. In 2011, UMG’s EMARCY label released Caribbean Rhapsody featuring the Concierto for Saxophones and Orchestra commissioned and premiered by the DSO with James Carter. In 2004, EMI Classics released his two guitar concertos Folias and Concierto Barroco with Manuel Barrueco as soloist (released on Koch in the USA in 2005). In 2009, Missa Latina’s Naxos recording was nominated for a Grammy under best contemporary composition category.
