He was the leader of the jazz trio Gruppo Music Marca in the 1980s and recorded three albums: Comunicazione Sonora (1982), Aria di Citta (83), and Mitteleuropa (1986), which were reissued by the English Label Arision in 2006. He founded his Italian quartet in 1987. They performed for almost 20 years and recorded two albums, Life in Israel (issued in Jazzis) as well as tours in Europe, Asia and Australia. He also founded the acid-jazz bands DMA Urban Jazz Funk (which performed in Europe and America) and Alfabeats Nu Jazz (which recorded two albums, Up to the Beat (2006) and Stones (2006)). Magris founded the Europlane Orchestra in 1998, a central-European jazz venture that was sponsored by INCECEI Central European Initiative. It featured several jazz musicians from different European countries. He recorded three albums with the Europlane Orchestra: Live At Zooest and Plays Kurt Weill, as well as Current Views (issued in Soul Note).

Magris collaborated with Tony Lakatos, a Hungarian saxophonist, on Check-In (issued in 2005 by Soul Note). Magris collaborated in 2006 with Art Davis and Jimmy “Junebug”, Jackson to create Kansas City Outbound, which was issued by JMood. He also collaborated that year with Herb Geller, alto saxophonist, on the album Il Bello del Jazz. A few years later, JMood released another album, An Evening With Herb Geller and The Roberto Magris Trio Live in Europe 2009.
