Born in Miami Beach, Florida. Raised in Fresno with six of his siblings. Westenberg graduated from Bullard High School in 1971. He was very active in football. He attended California State University in Fresno.
In 1983, he made his Broadway debut with Zorba as Nikos. He won the Theatre World Award. In September 1984, he took over the role as George in Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in Park with George and played alongside Bernadette Peters. He was nominated for a Tony Award and received a Drama Desk Award. His performance as Cinderella’s Prince, and the Wolf in Sondheim’s Into the Woods (1987) earned him a Drama Desk Award. He met Kim Crosby, his wife, while he was performing as Cinderella in Into the Woods (1987). In 1991’s Broadway original production of The Secret Garden, he starred alongside Mandy Patinkin and Daisy Eagan as well as Alison Fraser, Rebecca Luker, and Alison Fraser.
In 2002, Westenberg was in the US and Japan tour of The Full Monty. Westenberg has been in several MUNY (St. Louis) productions. He played Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady in 2001 opposite his wife, Kim Crosby, as Eliza Doolittle.
