After Dr. Long’s retirement, Smith returned to Troy in 1997 to take over as Director of Bands at Troy State University. Smith would stay at Troy for four more years, where he directed the Symphony Band and the Sound of the South Maring Band. He left Troy in 2001 to become a full-time employee of Warner Brothers Publications. While he was away from Troy, his position at Warner saw him travel the globe as a clinician and guest conductor with numerous ensembles, including New Mexico’s All-State Small School Band.

Before the beginning of the 2006–2007 school year, Troy University announced the re-hiring of Smith to the position of Coordinator of the Music Industry program.[2] On December 14, 2006, Smith announced his appointment as Director of Product Development for the C. L. Barnhouse Company, and an exclusive publishing arrangement with the firm, effective January 1, 2007.

In 2011, Smith composed a piece in memory of Mary Jo Leahey and it was premiered at the Mary Jo Leahey Symphonic Band Camp at University of Massachusetts Lowell on July 21, 2012. The piece is entitled, Earhart: Sounds of Courage, and reflects the bravery of Amelia Earhart as she attempted to fly around the world in 1937. It was commissioned by Deb Huber, associate director of bands at UMass Lowell.

Smith is a brother to Kappa Kappa Psi. He was initiated into Zeta Upsilon at Troy State University in April 1977. His work, “To the Summit”, is subtitled “Strive to the Highest”. The Kappa Kappa Psi Fraternity Hymn is used in the middle section of “To the Summit”. Smith is also a brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He was initiated at George Mason University, 1996. The Fraternity ordered Smith’s Spirit of Orpheus, 1998.

Robert Winston Smith, born October 24, 1958, is an American composer, arranger and teacher.

Smith is a composer for bands and has had success writing music for bugle corps and drum corps. In the mid-1970s, Smith was a member the Alabama Charioteers Drum and Bugle Corps. He was writing for Suncoast Sound from Clearwater, Florida in the mid-1980s, and his first major success was during that tenure. This included Suncoast Sound’s 1985 program “A Florida Suite”, which was the first drum corps to create a completely original musical program. [1] He would go on to write several years for Magic of Orlando. He wrote until 2007 for the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps of Toledo, Ohio. He arranged for the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps from 2011 to 2014. He began writing music for the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps in 2013. Around 2002, Robert and his wife Susan L. Smith began to work on a new project, writing a fully integrated music curriculum that would begin in elementary school and take students all the way through high school.
