PPR had decided not to renew De Sole’s contract after rescuing Gucci in bankruptcy in early 1990s. Although the Gucci brand has been successful, nine of the subsidiary labels that the company owns are struggling and losing money. Gucci’s fourth quarter 2003 net income, half a decade prior to Polet’s hire, was derived solely from its primary line. Its growth was slower than expected.

Three years later, Gucci’s sales and profits grew even faster than Polet’s ambitious plans outlined at the convention in Lisbon. All of its lines which were previously losing money became profitable except for Yves Saint Laurent though its losses have been cut by two thirds. The operating profit margin went from 10% to 16% within the three years. PPR’s stock which fell on the news of Polet’s hiring, rose 50% since until 2008.

He received his MBA in 1978 and joined Unilever where he held various positions until 2004. He was involved in global management and marketing. He later became the president of Unilever’s Malaysian division, as well as the president and chief executive officer of the ice cream, frozen foods, and Malaysian divisions. In July 2004, he joined Gucci.
