Robert John Maudsley, born 26 June 1953, is a British serial killer who was responsible for four murders. After being sentenced to life for one murder, he committed three more murders in prison. According to the autopsy report, he was accused of eating part of the brain of one the three men he had killed. This earned him the nicknames Hannibal the Cannibal and “The Brain Eater” in the British press. However, the Press Complaints Commission records the fact that national newspapers were later informed that the allegations were false by the Press Complaints Commission. Maudsley, who was executed by Ian Brady in May of this year, has been the longest-serving British prisoner. He is also the first person to have a whole-life order.
Maudsley was considered too dangerous to be kept in a regular cell in 1983. Two-cell cell unit was built by prison authorities in the basement Wakefield Prison. Due to his violent tendencies, he is escorted at all times by four prison officers.
Maudsley murdered two Wakefield Prison prisoners in 1978. Salney Darwood was his first victim, a murderer who had been convicted for the manslaughter her wife. Maudsley invited Darwood into his cell and then stabbed him. He later hid his body under his bed. Maudsley tried to lure other prisoners into his cell but they refused. Maudsley continued to search the wings for another victim and eventually stabbed Bill Roberts to his death. With a small knife, he hacked into Roberts’ skull and hit his head against the wall. Maudsley calmly entered the room of the prison officer, and placed the dagger on the desk. He then told him that the next roll would only be two.

In the 1960s, a young Maudsley was a London rent boy to help pay his drug addiction. After several suicide attempts, he was forced to seek out psychiatric treatment. He claimed that voices told him to kill his parents during his conversation with doctors. According to reports, he said that if he had killed his parents in 1970, no one would have died.
Maudsley was arrested in 1974 and sentenced to life imprisonment. John Farrell took Maudsley out for sex after Farrell showed him pictures of children he had abused sexually. Maudsley was later arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment. Maudsley was taken to Broadmoor Hospital where he was incarcerated with David Cheeseman. In 1977, Maudsley and David Cheeseman locked themselves in the cell together with David Francis (a child molester) who tortured him to death for nine hours. Maudsley was convicted and sent to Wakefield Prison for manslaughter. He was not happy with the transfer and expressed his desire to return to Broadmoor.
In March 2000, Maudsley unsuccessfully pleaded for the terms of his solitary confinement be relaxed, or to be allowed to commit suicide via a cyanide capsule. He also asked for a pet budgie, which was also denied. In 2010, the Daily Mirror reported that Maudsley made a plea to be able to play board games with prison staff to relieve his boredom.
