In his rookie season, Gamez won two tournaments, including the Northern Telecom Tucson Open. Only three other golfers have ever won their first PGA event: Marty Fleckman, Ben Crenshaw, and Garrett Willis. Perhaps his most famous shot is the 18th hole, where he shot his second shot from fairway. This gave him a one-stroke win over Greg Norman. Bay Hill has placed a plaque in the fairway of the 18th hole to commemorate the place Gamez shot his 7-iron from 176 yard.
Gamez organizes an annual tournament in Orlando for Team Gamez Foundation. He lives in Orlando, Florida. Since 2008, he hasn’t played on any full tour. He is a Republican.
Gamez sustained injuries in a car accident at Kemper Open 1998. His career began to decline. He failed to place in the top 125 of the PGA Tour money lists between 1998 and 2001. In 2001, his career was at a low point when he did not qualify for the Tour. His career began to recover. Between 2002 and 2005, he finished in the top-125 each year. This included a T-5 at Bank of America Colonial 2004 and a win in Valero Texas Open 2005. He won for the first time in 15 years after he had played in 394 events. This was a PGA Tour- record. His best finish at a major was T12 at the 1990 Open Championship.
