In 1977, Schnabel was appointed Assistant Professor in Computer Science at the University of Colorado Boulder. For 30 years, he remained on the faculty of CU-Boulder, first as an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science, then as a Full Professor in 1988. He was also Chair of the Department of Computer Science, Vice Provost for Academic Computing, Chief Information Officer, and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in the College of Engineering. Schnabel was the founding director of the Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society Institute (ATLAS).
