Robert Louis Stevenson, born February 7, 1976, is an ex- American college football player. He was a punter for the Florida Gators football club of the University of Florida and a placekicker.

Some commentators criticized Stevenson for his inconsistent play. He was known for delivering short kicks during lopsided wins but long punts when it mattered the most. In 1996, his longest punt was sixty-four yard against the Vanderbilt Commodores. Stevenson’s career average of 40.7 yards per punch was his Gators starting punter for three years. This ranks seventh in the Gators’ all time list, one place behind Steve Spurrier, his Gators head coach.

Stevenson graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance in 2001. He currently works as a Manatee County deputy sheriff. He and his wife Holly live in Palmetto , Florida, and they have three daughters.

Stevenson’s best year average was 42.1 yards per kickoff in 1996 when Florida won the Southeastern Conference title. They also defeated the top-ranked Florida State Seminoles to win the Sugar Bowl. This resulted in Stevenson winning the consensus national championship. He was responsible for both punting and kickoff duties during the 1997 season. Stevenson was a formidable kickoffs player, with 21 of the seventy-one kickoffs ending in touchbacks and more than half his kickoffs reaching either the opposing goal line, or beyond.

Stevenson was born in Bradenton and grew up playing football. Stevenson attended Manatee High School, Bradenton. He was the Manatee Hurricanes’ starting punter and placekicker from 1992 to 1994. In 1992, the Hurricanes won the Florida Class 5A football championship. Stevenson made a 47-yard field goal. The Hurricanes returned to the final in 1993. USA Today named Stevenson a 1994 high school All-American as a senior. Ironically, Stevenson was a quarterback dreamer, but the Hurricanes needed more kickers, so he became a lifelong soccer player.

Stevenson was awarded an athletic scholarship to the University of Florida to Gainesville, Florida. He played for Steve Spurrier’s Florida Gators football teams from 1995 to 1997. As a true freshman, he was awarded the starting punter spot and remained as the primary punter for the Gators until 1997.

Prior to the 1998 season, Stevenson was diagnosed with Graves Disease. Although he initially hoped to take a medical redshirt in 1998 and return the following year, the diagnosis effectively ended his football career.
