He is currently the Head of Vehicle Performance for the Williams Martini Racing Formula One Team. Before joining Williams, he worked as the Ferrari race engineer for Felipe Massa. Both were transferred to Williams after eight years; Smedley was Head of Vehicle Performance and Massa as the driver.

Lucy is Smedley’s wife. They have two sons. After the passing of their daughter Minnie, they hold fundraising events in Teesside for the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society. They are also patrons for Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice which is a charity for young children and sick babies.

Following Massa’s injury at the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix, Smedley carried on with the role of race engineer for stand-in drivers Luca Badoer and Giancarlo Fisichella as they took over Massa’s seat for the remainder of the 2009 season. Smedley had previously worked with Fisichella at Jordan.

On 31 January 2014 it was announced by Ted Kravitz (Sky Sports F1) on the last day of testing at Jerez, that Smedley would once again resume his professional relationship with Massa by joining Williams for the 2014 season.

He was appointed Felipe Massa’s race engineer in the middle of 2006 season. Massa’s form immediately improved and his previous mistakes became less frequent. In August 2006, Massa won the Turkish Grand Prix and took his first Formula One pole position. Massa is fondly remembered for Smedley’s humorous and sometimes frank radio transmissions. He was also heard saying “Felipe Baby, Stay Cool” at the 2009 Malaysian Grand Prix after Massa complained about not having a clear helmet for the wet race.

After graduating from university in the main activity of chassis engineering, Smedley started working for Pilbeam Racing Designs in 1997 on the MP80 Peugeot. He was a suspension engineer for the touring car team. After that, he worked in Formula 3000 with Williams and then became a suspension engineer for the Williams touring car team. He made his debut in Formula One when he joined the Jordan Grand Prix team.

Smedley started his career at Jordan as a data acquisition specialist. He was responsible for all telemetric data used by the team’s race engineers to support the driver. Smedley was a track engineer in Jordan for 2002 and 2003, before he joined the Ferrari test team at end 2003. Smedley chose to start his career with the Ferrari test team due to the opportunity to provide more technical input than is possible in the race team.
