He has been serving as the 39th District Senator in North Carolina since October 2, 2019. He is a Republican and was a member of North Carolina’s House of Representatives from Mecklenburg County until 2013, when he defeated Martha Alexander, the long-serving Democratic incumbent, until 2016, when Mary Gardner Belk defeated him.
Bryan was inspired to teach again and returned to North Carolina in order to enroll at Duke University School of Law. He graduated with high honors in 1998. Bryan was a summer associate with O’Melveny & Myers LLP in Los Angeles during 1997. He also spent a semester in Santiago, Chile at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.
Bryan has received numerous awards for his legal work including being awarded the Business Leaders Magazine’s “Movers and Shakers” award in 2008, being named to Charlotte Business Journal ‘s “40 under 40” list in 2009, and being named a North Carolina Super Lawyers ‘ “Rising Star” from 2009-2011.
In 2012, Bryan was first elected to the North Carolina General Assembly as a Representative from House District 88, which covers approximately 75,000 residents in Mecklenburg County’s south Charlotte area. In the 2012 election, Bryan ran unopposed in the Republican primary and easily defeated twenty-year incumbent and former Minority Whip, Martha B. Alexander, earning close to fifty-five percent of the vote in the general election. Bryan was reelected in 2014 running unopposed in the primary and defeating challenger Margie Storch. In 2016, Bryan was defeated by Democratic challenger Mary Gardner Belk in the general election after both were unopposed in their respective primaries.
Bryan was admitted to North Carolina State Bar in 1998. He began his career as an associate at K&L Gates’ Charlotte office. Later, he was appointed special counsel at Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein’s Charlotte office. Bryan joined Womble Bond Dickinson’s Charlotte office in 2006. It is the largest North Carolina law firm. Bryan was a partner at Womble Carlyle’s Real Estate Development Practice Group, and was also a member the firm’s recruiting committee.

After graduating from Sanderson High school, Bryan entered the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 1989 and earned a B.A. In 1993, he was awarded a B.A. in History. Bryan was an officer in the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma honor society while attending UNC. He was also involved in student government and served as InterVarsity Christian Fellowship President.
Bryan graduated with distinction in 1993. He applied for and was accepted into the fourth Teach For America corps. This is part of an effort to “grow the movement for educational equality and excellence.” Bryan taught second and third grades in Lynwood’s bilingual Abbott Elementary School for the next two- years.
