Gustafsson is from a musical background. Christina, her sister is also a jazz singer. She learned to play the guitar in Grums, Sweden at age eight. She attended Sundstagymnasiter, Karlstad, where she learned classical guitar and then switched to singing. She studied at Mannes College of Music and the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, both in New York City. She met other musicians while living in New York and founded the Rigmor Gustafsson Quartet. In 1995 she graduated and the quintet toured in Sweden, Germany and Switzerland between 1996-97.
In 1996 Rigmor Gustafsson released her debut album In The Light of Day. However, in 1994 Gustafssons children’s record Sanger fran TV-series Planeten Pi was available. Here she sings together with Anders Lundin (Lars In de Betou).
