Richie Castellano, a fifth-generation musician, was born in Brooklyn, New York City, on February 7, 1980. In 1985, the Castellano family relocated to Staten Island. At seven years old, he began playing guitar. He was influenced by Buddy Holly, Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis. He began songwriting in the 1990s after being influenced by the Beatles. He was also influenced by Emerson, Lake, Palmer, and Genesis. He also credits Queen’s music as an influence in the development of his musical style.
After completing his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Production, he began post- graduate study under Dr. Ferry while simultaneously working as a staff producer for Ferry’s record company, Larchmont Records. Castellano received his Master’s in Music degree from the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music, December 2002.
In addition to performing with Blue Öyster Cult, he also plays guitar in the band Morning Starlett. He also works in his family’s music store (Castellano’s House of Music) in Staten Island on a private basis. In 2011, Castellano had a viral video hit with his rendition of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” where he performed all of the vocals and instrumentals.
In May 2014, Castellano began a podcast called Band Geek with Richie Castellano.
Castellano was enrolled at the Conservatory of Music, State University of New York at Purchase, in 1998. He studied Studio Production and the then-new digital recording method. He produced and engineered Regina Spektor’s debut album 11:11 from 1999 to 2001. It was self-released on CD July 9, 2001. Castellano, who was studying advanced digital recording techniques as well as audio engineering at Wave Studio on Staten Island under Ron Thal, studied during the summer 2000. Castellano helped Thal to produce Uncool. He also started his association with Blue Oyster Cult that year as a substitute Front of House Engineer. He also formed a band called “Richie & the Pocketrockets” with one of his professors, Grammy Award-nominated producer, Dr. Joe Ferry. On August 21, 2001, the band released Touch of Blue: A Blues Tribute To The Grateful Dead on CMH Records.

Richie Castellano, born February 7, 1980, is an American musician/engineer. He is currently a member of Blue Oyster Cult.
Castellano spent his first semester at Port Richmond, Staten Island high school. He then transferred to Curtis High School on Staten Island where he joined Curtis High School’s Guitar Ensemble. Castellano first met Ron “Bumblefoot”, Thal at that time. He became one of his most important mentors. Castellano created a solo concept album of 13 songs in 1997 after being inspired by Thal’s 1995 solo album, The Adventures of Bumblefoot. The album, Alone in My Basement was an unexpected success, with the first pressing selling out in a month. Two songwriting awards were won by him for Alone in My Basement. The unusual production methods used in the recording and production of the album were also praised by EQ magazine. He was selected to compose a song for his high-school graduation. Castellano graduated in 1998 from Curtis High School.
In December 2003, Castellano served as sound engineer on Blue Öyster Cult’s 13 city tour of Germany. He first performed with Blue Öyster Cult as bass guitarist in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 18, 2004, shortly after Danny Miranda left the band. He remained in that position until early 2007, when original member Allen Lanier retired from the band. At that time, Castellano filled the position of rhythm guitar and keyboards, while Danny Miranda returned briefly to fill the position of bassist. By April 2007, the bass guitar position was filled by Rudy Sarzo on a semi-permanent basis.
