Richard Leslie Vranch, born 29 June 1959, is an actor, comedian, writer, and musician from England. He is best known for his music contribution to the British TV series “Whose Line Is it Anyway?”

He was the host of Let’s Pretend, a children’s show on ITV and Jackanory, on BBC One. In 2005, he also participated in a charity special called The Weakest Link. In 1999, he was a guest on BBC Radio 4’s long-running panel show Just a Minute. He was hired by Tamasha Theatre (East is East), in 2002, to write the show Ryman and Sheik. He also worked as an Artistic Associate for the company for a few more years.

Acting work includes Dogman, The Dead Set, and sketch shows touring the world from Mexico to the Palestinian Territories. He appeared as Gilmanuk in the audio Doctor Who story “Theatre of War” (Big Finish Productions). He has improvised comedy in the Middle East, Far East and India – 40 countries in all. He has written for stage, radio and TV, and made several animated films with artist Lucy Allen. They have had their cartoons published in Maxim, Punch, and The Spectator.

Vranch was the host of Beat That Einstein on Channel 4 in 1994. He has also published papers in scientific journals. On BBC Radio 2, he discussed the September 2008 switch-on at the Large Hadron Collider with Simon Singh and Jeremy Vine.

Vranch performs comedy with The Comedy Store Players every Wednesday at The Comedy Store, London. He is a comedian and a half of the hula hoop/science double act, Dr Hula. He has voiced radio and TV commercials for British Airways, Lidl, and Saab, and he also narrates TV documentaries including the first series Hotel Inspector. Since 1979, he has been performing and he formed a comedy duo with Tony Slattery. The duo hosted The Music Game on Channel 4 and more than 100 episodes of Cue The Music (ITV). He was the original British television series Whose Line is It Anyway’s guitarist and improvising pianist. In 1988, only a small portion of his work was musical. Vranch performed and co-wrote The Paul Merton Show at London Palladium in 1994.

Vranch received a PhD from Cambridge University in Physics. He joined the Footlights as a first-year doctoral candidate in 1981. He was also a contemporary to Hugh Laurie and Tony Slattery. Before he became a comedian full-time, he was a Cavendish Laboratory researcher and St John’s College Oxford research fellow for nine months.

In 2006 he appeared at the Ars Nova theatre, New York and co-founded the improv storytelling group The YarnBards. In 2012, with others he co-wrote and appeared in the UK tour and West End run of the stage show Paul Merton Out Of My Head.
