Umbers was the son of Declan (1927-1913) and Mary (1933-1999) Umbers. He was born in Otahuhu (New Zealand) on 17 March 1971. He is the youngest child of five and brother to Gregory, Gregory, and Anthony. He was born in Papatoetoe. In 1989, he studied management at the University of Waikato. He then transferred to Sydney in 1992 to get more intensive formation at an Opus Dei centre in Chatswood in New South Wales. He received a Bachelor of Economics degree from the University of Sydney, and a Masters of Business from the University of Waikato in New Zealand.

Pope Francis appointed Umbers Auxiliary Bishop in Sydney on 24 June 2016. He also gave Anthony Randazzo the title see of Thala, Tunisia. Anthony Fisher consecrated them in St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney on 24 August 2016. On behalf of Fisher, he sits on the Archdiocese of Sydney council of priests and represents the archdiocese of St John of God hospitals. He has published works in philosophy and regularly speaks at youth gatherings. Richard James Umbers, an Australian Roman Catholic Bishop, was born 17 March 1971. He is the auxiliary bishop of Sydney’s Roman Catholic Archdiocese and the youngest Australian Catholic bishop. He is also the first Opus Dei priest to be ordained a bishop of Australia.

In 1996, Umbers was admitted to the Opus Dei seminary, Cavabianca (Rome) and he continued his studies at Santa Croce Pontifical University in Rome, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Theology in 1999. Umbers received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Navarre in Spain between 1999 and 2002. He was ordained as a deacon on 14 February 2002 and was then ordained by Bishop Javier Echevarria to be a priest. This was done at the Marian shrine in Torreciudad, Spain, on 1 September 2002. Umbers is also the title Bishop of Thala, Tunisia.
