Richard Tarnas is one of the most popular and richest Psychologist who was born on February 21, 1950 in Geneva, Canton of Geneva, Switzerland. Tarnas was the son of American parents. He was a former president of Michigan Federal Bar Association and a professor of law. Mary Louise was his mother and a homemaker and teacher. He was the eldest of eight siblings and grew up in Detroit. There he studied Latin and Greek at the University of Detroit Jesuit Academy High School and Academy.

Tarnas’ second book, Prometheus the Awakener (published 1995), focuses on the astrological characteristics of the planet Uranus. It describes “the uncanny manner astrological patterns seem to coincide with events and destiny patterns in the lives both of individuals and of societies”. Tarnas suggests that the mythological Uranus’ characteristics do not correspond to the astrological properties. A better identification would be the mythological Prometheus.

In 2006, Tarnas published his third book, Cosmos and Psyche: Intimations of a New World View. It claims that the major events of Western cultural history correlate consistently and meaningfully with the observed angular positions of the planets. The book received favorable reviews in Tikkun magazine, in an anthroposophical journal, and in the web magazine Reality Sandwich (by Daniel Pinchbeck), but was panned in the Wall Street Journal.

In 2007 John Cleese and Tarnas gave some public lectures together at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California and in Santa Barbara. The lectures discussed regaining a connection to the sacred in the modern world. Cleese and Tarnas then taught a seminar at CIIS called “The Comic Genius: A Multidisciplinary Approach”.

Tarnas’s 1980-1990 book, The Passion of the Western Mind, Understanding the Ideas that Have Shaped Our World View was a narrative history of Western thought. It became a bestseller and is still in use at universities until 2000. Joseph Campbell, Stanislav Grof and John E. Mack all highly praised the book.

Tarnas featured in the 2006 film Entheogen: Awakening the Divine Within, a documentary about rediscovering an enchanted cosmos in the modern world.
