Skinner was one of the first presenters of Newsbeat on BBC Radio 1 in 1973. This role he held until 1980 when he was a regular radio 1 presenter of music programs. He took over the Monday-Thursday night show from Mike Read in December. Skinner also continued to work as a studio producer for Newsbeat and as an in-vision continuity reporter for Thames Television. Skinner claims that he reported the news about John Lennon’s death to Paul McCartney’s house by telephone in the early hours on December 9, 1980.
Instead of publicising new Boomtown Rats release as planned, Bob Geldof announced the creation of the Band Aid project on Skinner’s Radio 1 show in 1984.
On 30 September 1984, 17 years to the day after Radio 1 began, Skinner took over the Sunday afternoon Top 40 show, also broadcast on FM, on the same day that David Jensen, who had just left Radio 1, started presenting The Network Chart Show on commercial radio in competition.
He was a BBC television presenter of Top of the Pops, The Old Grey Whisle Test, as well as playing two roles in the 1980s’ Band Aid and Live Aid phenomena.

Skinner was born in Portsmouth, where he attended Portsmouth Grammar School. Skinner was the founder of Portsmouth Hospital Broadcasting. It first went on- air in April 1970. He studied newspaper journalism at Highbury Technical College. He began his newspaper journalism career at The News. After that, he moved to Kent’s Erith Observer newspaper and briefly appeared on BBC Radio Medway. In October 1971, he joined BBC Radio Solent as a presenter of music programmes, including Beat ‘n Track and newsreader.
Skinner was married to Deborah. They have two sons, Christopher (born 1977) & Jamie (born 1996).
In late 1981, Skinner became presenter of Radio 1’s Rock On magazine show on Saturday afternoons and Roundtable on Friday evenings, on which he and guests would review the week’s new releases. He continued with the programme until late 1985. In addition to Roundtable, from 1983 Skinner presented the Saturday Live show from 4 to 6:30 pm alongside Andy Batten-Foster.
