Before joining Genentech, he was a professor at Stanford University from 1982 through 2001. He was awarded the Alan T. Waterman Award in 1989 and the W. Alden Spencer Award in Molecular Biology in 1993. In 1997, he won the NAS Award in Molecular Biology. In 2013, he won the Kavli Prize in Neuroscience in Neuroscience along with James E. Rothman and Thomas C. Sudhof. He also received the University of Wisconsin-Madison Life Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award. He is a Fellow of American Academy of Arts and Sciences and Member of National Academy of Sciences.
He received his B.S. He received his B.S. in biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in chemistry under the direction of Eric H. Davidson. As a graduate student, he collaborated with Keiichi Andakura and Arthur Riggs in order to synthesize Somatostatin at Genentech. After completing his graduate studies, he worked briefly with Davidson and then with Eric Kandel at Columbia University. He continued his work with recombinantDNA to identify the egg-layinghormone (ELH) family of neuropeptides while at Columbia.
He was recruited by Genentech from Stanford in 2001 to replace Dennis Henner as Senior Vice President and Chief Researchers Officer. He was appointed Chief Scientific Officer and Executive Vice-President of Research in 2008. He was named Head of Genentech Research and Early Development after the acquisition by Roche. He is also a member the Roche Corporate Executive Committee. He is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the University of California San Francisco.
