Richard Oetker, a German billionaire heir who was born 4 January 1951, is the CEO of multinational food processor company Dr. Oetker. He was abducted by Dieter Zlof in 1976, a Slovene-born mechanic. Only after paying a large ransom was he released.

The 34-year old Dieter Zlof, an Slovene-born mechanic, kidnapped the 25-yearold student on 14 December 1976. He tied his feet and wrists with manacles that would give electric shocks if he screamed, tried to escape, and locked him in a crate. Oetker stood 1.94m (6’4″) tall. The crate measured 1.45m (4’9″) in length and was 70 cm (28″) in width. Oetker was thumping against the crate in the early hours of the morning of 15 December when a loud noise caused a nearly fatal shock. It broke Oetker’s thighs as well as two of his ribs. Oetker’s screams lasted ten seconds and the pain was so severe that he wanted to die.

In May 1997, Zlof, who had buried the ransom in a forest around 30 km (20 miles) southeast of Munich, went to England to swap mouldy banknotes worth DM12.5 million for usable money. The rest had mouldered away in its cache. He was re-arrested, served out a two-year sentence, and confessed to the kidnapping in a 1997 autobiography which was written by his barrister’s wife.
