Richard Lainhart is one of the most popular and richest American composer who was born on February 14, 1953 in Vestal, New York, United States. Richard Morris Lainhart, February 14, 1953 – December 30 2011, was an American electronic music composer. He combined analog and digital instrumentation with extended performance methods derived from traditional acoustic guitars. Lainhart’s music has been associated with the revival of modular analog synthesis. He often performed with a Buchla200e modular synthesizer controlled via a Haken Audio Continuum multidimensional controller.

A Haiku Setting, his film won several awards at the 2002 International Festival of Cinema and Technology (Toronto). He was awarded a Film & Media grant from the New York State Council on the Arts in 2009 for A Haiku Setting, a full-length intermedia performance that combines live analog electronics with four-channel playback and high-definition, computer-animated film projection.

In January 2010, he performed as a featured live media audio-visual artist at Netmage 2010 in Bologna, Italy. In December 2010, his year-long timescape film One Year won the Deffie award for Best Experimental Film at HDFEST 2010 in Portland, OR.

Lainhart has been a seminal American composer working in electronic media since that time, with numerous recordings on CD, vinyl, and the Internet. Lainhart composed more than 150 electronic and audio works. He used virtually every type of electronic and acoustic instrumentation. On the XI label, a retrospective of Lainhart’s early work, 10,000 Shades Of Blue was released in 2001.

Lainhart, originally from Vestal in New York, studied electronic music at State University of New York (Binghamton), from 1971-1973. He worked alongside Nicholas Ray in 1973 on the soundtrack of Ray’s last film, We Can’t Go Home Again. However, Lainhart’s music was not included in the final version. Lainhart received his bachelor’s in music degree from the State University at New York at Albany. He studied electronic music composition with Joel Chadabe. Lainhart also worked extensively with Coordinated Electronic Music Studio, (CEMS), which was the largest integrated Moog modular synthesizer systems in the world at that time.

Lainhart’s first solo album of electronic music, These last Days, was released in 1987 for the Periodic Music CD Label. Lainhart’s music was known for its unique blend of impressionist sonorities and minimalist structures, as well as real-time performance techniques. This music earned him a reputation that has spanned all genres, including jazz, avant garde, and jazz. The Periphery label released a follow-up recording, Polychromatic Integers.

In 2008, Lainhart was commissioned by the Electronic Music Foundation to contribute a work to New York Soundscape. In 2009, he was one of 200 electric guitarists who performed in the US premiere of Rhys Chatham’s “A Crimson Grail” at Lincoln Center in New York City. In July 2010, he performed as a featured electronic artist at Avantgarde Festival Schiphorst 2010 in Schiphorst, Germany.
