He represents Bharatiya Janata Party and is a Member from Kerala as a nominated Lok Sabha member. This Lok Sabha is responsible for the Anglo-Indian community, from 2015 to the present.
In 2014, Hay joined Bharatiya Janata Party. Hay was one of two members appointed to the 16th Lok Sabha to represent the Anglo-Indian community.. He was also appointed to the Public Accounts Committee on 1 May 2016.
Richard Hay was praised for securing NAAC accreditation for four government colleges as his principal. He was the chairman of Malabar Heritage Society, and the first chairperson for Special Olympics International, Kerala. Professor Hay, a member of Lions International was elected to the position of Lions district governor from 2003-2004. He is currently the President of Kannur’s Latin Catholic Association. He is also the Vice-President of Anglo- Indian Association. Hay founded the Campus Innovative Group. This group visits colleges to encourage students and discuss ways to improve the country. His book, Professionalization in Teachers and Institutions was published in 2015.
