Groenendaal won UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships 2000, and the overall titles at the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup 2000-1998 2000-2001 2003-2004. He also won the Cyclo-cross Superprestige 1997-1998 2000-2001.
Groenendaal assisted his Dutch National teammate Lars Boom in launching an attack at the end of the final lap to win the gold medal at the 2008 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships. Groenendaal was twelfth.
Groenendaal sustained a knee injury in the 2003-2004 season. He was able to recover some form at the end of the season and won the Dutch national champions jersey. Groenendaal won the 2003-2004 World Cup title after the last event of the season. Groenendaal won Pijnacker’s final world cup race, where there was double point on offer. Sven Nys, his teammate and World Cup leader, finished further back and lost lead in the World Cup classification. Groenendaal maintained his winning form and won the Gazet Van Antwerpen final race.

Reinier, Groenendaal’s father, was an Elite Cyclo-cross cyclist. He was the Dutch Elite Champion in 1985. Groenendaal started riding as a junior in the year 1987. In 1987-1988, Groenendaal was the Dutch Junior Champion. He also won the Junior World Cyclo-Cross Championships in 1988-89. He joined the Amateur category the following season, where he remained until the 1993-94 season, when he became a professional. He showed promise early in his career as a road rider, finishing in the top ten of the 1992 Tour de l’Avenir. This year he also participated in the Summer Olympics road race. Groenendaal was often compared with his father Rein at the beginning of his career. One Belgian commentator sometimes called him Reintje. After two seasons Groenendaal was on more podiums around the world than his father, and the comparisons stopped.
Groenendaal was a member of the new Dutch cycling team Rabobank in 1996. He would remain with them until the end 2006-2007 season, when he decided to ride for an individual sponsor. Groenendaal won the Cyclo-Cross World Cup in 1998 and 2001, and was also Cyclo-Cross World Champion 2000. Groenendaal attacked on the first lap, and was pursued by Mario De Clercq, the defending Cyclo- Cross World Champion. Groenendaal was then followed by Sven Nys, Groenendaal’s Rabobank teammate. Groenendaal became the World Champion because Nys refused to cooperate with De Clercq’s chase. Groenendaal won the Superprestige series, the World Cup and was the number one UCI-ranked rider. Groenendaal won the Dutch National Cyclocross championships. Groenendaal was a favourite to win the World Championships, but he crashed during the race. He did not recover and lost his Rainbow jersey. Groenendaal was a favorite for the World Championships, but he lost the national cyclocross jersey to Gerben de Knegt in the 2001-2002 season. However, he did win the Heerlen World Cup which made him a favourite for the World Championships that were being held a week later. Mario De Clercq was victorious over Vannoppen and Nys. Groenendaal was fourth overall and the best non-Belgian. Groenendaal won first race with the Koppenbergcross of the Gazet Van Antwerpen trophy 2002-2003, ahead of Nys or Wellens. He was also awarded a World Cup.
