Some of this research has been published in an advanced textbook. He is now retired and was chair of mathematics statistics at Leiden University. Gill is also well-known for his pro bono consultancy and advocacy for victims of incompetent statistics testimony. He was the one who convicted and sentenced a Dutch nurse for wrongfully serving six years.

He moved to Leiden University’s Department of Mathematics in 2006 and became the chair of mathematics statistics. He has been involved in statistical research on quantum information, scientific integrity, and forensic statistics. He also has experience in survival analysis, semiparametric modeling, causality and missing data, machine-learning, and statistics for image analysis. Gill publishes also on the foundations for several mathematical sciences, including the foundations in probability, statistics, mathematics and quantum physics. In 2017, he reached mandatory retirement age and continues to do research and consulting.

He moved to Utrecht University’s Department of Mathematics in 1988. Gill was appointed chair in mathematical stochastics. This chair was responsible for the three mathematical sciences: mathematical statistics, probability theory and operations research. His PhD students include Sara van de Geer and Mark van der Laan.

There he worked at the Mathematical Centre, later renamed Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica. Gill received his PhD in 1979 with the thesis Censoring & Stochastic Integrals. This was supervised and awarded by Jacobus Oosthoff, Vrije Universiteit. Gill worked at the University of Copenhagen’s Statistical Research Unit in Autumn 1980. Gill worked for ten more years with Danish and Norwegian statisticians, contributing to the publication Statistical models based upon counting processes. He was appointed head of the Department of Mathematical Statistics of CWI in 1983.

Richard Gill is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a past president of The Netherlands Society for Statistics and Operations Research, which publishes the journal Statistica Neerlandica. Gill was selected as the 2010–2011 Distinguished Lorentz Fellow by the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences.
