Richard Beard is one of the most popular and richest Author who was born on January 12, 1967 in Swindon, England, United Kingdom. Richard James Beard was born 12 January 1967. He is an English author of fiction, non- fiction books, and short literature. For his memoir The Day That Went Missing, he was awarded the 2018 PEN/Ackerley Prize.

The first novels by Beard are experimental works in Oulipo’s literary tradition. In these books, an artificial constraint is placed on the narrative. X20, A Novel of Not Smoking, 1996 is divided into twenty parts. Each part contains the same number of words as the 20 cigarettes in a pack. The story’s narrator, who is trying to quit smoking, makes it a point to write something each time he feels the need to. It was named a New York Times Summer Reading Selection in 1997. It was called “an unusually intelligent and funny first book” by the Sunday Times.

Beard set his next novel, The Cartoonist (2000), about a man and his teen-girl cousin who set out for a major theme park with plans for sabotage, in Euro Disney. But after completing the manuscript, he was informed by a libel lawyer that under copyright law, he was forbidden to use the name of that theme park at all. He had to re-write the entire book before it could be published, to avoid a defamation suit.

He taught British Studies at the University of Tokyo from 2003-2006 (and returned again as a visiting professor from 2016-2017), and was Director of the National Academy of Writing from 2009 until 2017. He has a creative writing fellowship with the University of East Anglia.

Beard’s second novel Damascus (1998) takes place on the 1st of November 1993. This was the day that the Maastricht Treaty became effective and all British citizens became citizens of European Union. Beard used, with twelve notable exceptions, only the nouns published in The Times on that date to write his book. This book tells the story of a young couple who meet for the first time in real life. They fall in love and must decide if it is the start of a new chapter. In 1999, it was named a New York Times Notable Book. Publishers Weekly described Damascus as “Good-natured and witty, but also fresh and inventive.” Beard’s manipulating of language and events to make the theme point can sometimes undermine the credibility of characters’ motivations. However, the brilliance of his work deserves the appreciation of the reader. “.
