He was a club player for the Dewsbury Rams (two spells), and the Featherstone Rovers Heritage No. 823) (two spells), Widnes Vikings, (Heritage No. the Rochdale Hornets and at representative level for France. He also coached at club level for York City Knights, Hull F.C. (two spells as Assistant Coach), Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and Warrington Wolves (First team coach c. 2014…2015).

In February 2013, it was announced that Richard Agar would coach France for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup. Agar coached France to the World Cup Quarter- Final

On 2 June 2014, Richard quit his job with Wakefield Trinity Wildcats with immediate effect and had been replaced by his assistant James Webster. On 10 June 2014, it was confirmed Agar will become first team coach of Warrington Wolves for 2015 Super League season working alongside Tony Smith.

Hull F.C. employed him as an assistant coach for four years. Under the guidance of Peter Sharp and John Kear. Hull F.C. After Sharp’s departure, Hull F.C. appointed Richard Agar their Head Coach.
