He was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2005. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate from York University in 2006 and made a Fellow of The Royal Society of Canada. He is currently the artist-in residence at the National Ballet of Canada and a board member of Dancer Transition Resource Centre.
Harrington left the stage in 2004 but he returned to the stage to perform the role of Prince Gremin for the National Ballet of Canada’s 2010 production of Onegin.

Harrington was a student at Canada’s National Ballet School. In 1983, he joined the National Ballet of Canada and was made principal dancer in 1988. He was a partner with many renowned ballerinas, including Ekaterina Maximova and Carla Fracci. He has performed with companies such as La Scala Theatre Ballet and San Francisco Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, and others. Harrington’s classic roles include Romeo and Juliet, Basilio and Don Quixote and Kastchei and The Firebird. He also played the role of Apollo in Balanchine’s Apollo. James Kudelka was responsible for several Harrington roles, including Rothbart (1999), Peter/The Nutcracker (1996) and the central role of The Four Seasons (1997). Glen Tetley, a choreographer, also created Lewis Carroll’s roles in Alice (1992), and The Young Gentleman (La Ronde) (1988) for Harrington.
Harrington was a part of Norman Jewison’s The January Man and the film adaptations of The Four Seasons for which he received a Gemini Award. Harrington’s TV credits include the CBC Television specials Karen Kain, Dancing in the Moment, and Wild Hearts in Strange Times. Margie Gillis was also featured in the specials. Harrington’s musical theatre debut was in Robin Hood at Toronto’s Winter Garden Theatre in 2002.
Harrington was also a recurring guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance Canada. In summer 2014, Rex appeared as a contestant with his fiance, Bob Hope, on the second season of The Amazing Race Canada, where he finished 7th.
